Musings : 6/1/2015 : Music Monday : Can't Go Back

Hey Everybody!

Hope this note finds you well and happy. I'm keeping myself busy. Grateful for my part time day gig. Since I've been slacking in the writing new tunes category, I'm going to keep sharing the ones I have already recorded. Hope you don't mind. If you do, you don't have to listen! LOL

We have a gig coming up on July 18th in Alameda, which is ten days after the fifth anniversary of this album's "release." I guess the date of an album's release means something in the mainstream music business- you know, the one that centers around eligibility for awards and giant marketing machines and tight abs, clothing and perfume lines and all that, but it doesn't come into play in my current existence.

So, the first tune from the album:

"Can't Go Back" - a funky take on a life lesson. Whenever I hear this song, I shake my head in wonder at some of the BS we (well, some of us) decide to endure on the rocky road of romance.
Hey, at least I got a song out of it. That's more than some people can say. I left a little bit out of the description from my bandcamp account, which follows immediately below. Come to the gig and I'll fill you in on the rest. ;)

Inspiration:

I wrote this song after getting a speeding ticket in Fairfax, CA coming home from a band rehearsal. I wasn't paying attention because I was arguing with my now "ex" husband. It's pretty much how the whole thing went down, with just a tiny little bit changed for expediency's sake. You know, creative license and all that.

lyrics

Lyrics:
Driving down the road with that man of mine
When he started to give me a really hard time
Told me about some girl that he recently met
He had already started up with her
when we weren’t done yet
When he said to me “ I can’t go back”
I felt as if I’d have a heart attack
I told him – what makes you think you can put an dend
To something you never had the backbone to begin

“Can’t go back to where you never been”
Can’t get out before you come in
Won’t shoot straight ‘til you been around
Got to get lost before you can be found
Won’t know good ‘til you had bad
You can’t lose what you never had

Well, I parked the car and as we went upstairs
I realized that he’d never care
So, I took a good long look at what I was givin’ up
And I figured that it didn’t amount to much
So I packed my things, trying not to cry
Never even looked over my shoulder to say g’bye

“Can’t go back to where you never been”
Can’t get out before you come in
Won’t shoot straight ‘til you been around
Got to get lost before you can be found
Won’t know good ‘til you had bad
You can’t lose what you never had
