Blues, Rack 'n Roll & Mo' BLUES!

No that's not a typo, I promise!
Blues : I had a great time belting it out yesterday afternoon with Livin' Like Kings at Biscuits & Blues! It was Round 4  of the Golden Gate Blues Society's regional International Blues Challenge. I knew it would be stiff competition, because as tight as we are and as much as I love my Kings, I used to go see Delta Wires at the Saloon and beg Ernie to let me sit in! He never would, told me to get my own band! (thanks for the great advice, Ernie!)  That was about 20 years ago - that horn section is STILL fierce and Ernie plays a mean harp! So, they took the round after a well fought royal blues battle. We all had fun and we are more motivated to keep on pluggin' and playing the blues for you! The finals are November 13th - at Biscuits and Blues - I'm going to cheer on all the finalists. If you are a blues lover in Marin, and want to carpool to SF for this event, hit me up!
Rack 'n Roll! : I'm SO thrilled to be participating again in the Rack 'n Roll Breastival this year, OCTOBER 1st at 19 Broadway - I'll be singing two of my favorite tunes, "Bring Me Some Water" by Melissa Etheridge and "Son of a Preacher Man" by Dusty Springfield!  - two of many talented artists who have been affected by breast cancer. That said, I'm only one of 17 vocalists - it will be a great night for music in Fairfax - so head on over after you've had your fill at HSB in GGP!
Mo' BLUES : The world's most infamous blues bar, San Francisco's oldest beerstablishment, The Saloon, celebrates 150 years on October 8th ! Ron Hacker is playing on Saturday October 8th! But I get the honor of ringin' in the 8th at midnight on the 7th! So please join me and Livin' Like Kings, FRIDAY OCTOBER 7th at The SALOON, 1232 Grant Avenue in San Francisco - I will be inviting many of my fellow blues playing Saloonatics to join us on this momentous occasion! As my old pal Johnny Nitro used to say "It'll be JUST LIKE NEW YEAR'S EVE!! RIIIIDE!" You won't want to miss this party!

Long Live the King!

Happy Birthday to BB King! One of the first blues tunes I ever learned was "Thrill is Gone." I used to drive Johnny Ace crazy when I called it at a jam. BB is truly a living legend and an inspiration to us all, and especially love the way he mentors up and coming blues artists, such as the Bay Area's own Tommy Castro. Long live the KING! You are one of the main reasons we are inspired to be"Livin' Like Kings!"

Bittersweet Body & Soul

Today would have been Amy Winehouse's 28th birthday. To recognize this day, Tony Bennett scheduled an early release of their duet of Body and Soul.
I am struck with sadness for her family on this day, because it's terrible to lose a family member, especially so young. The pain can be paralyzing - therefore,  I'm glad to see the family channeling their grief into something positive, via the AMY WINEHOUSE FOUNDATION

Do Not Scatter Your Powers

"Do not scatter your powers. Engage in one kind of business only, and stick to it, faithfully,  until you succeed, or until your experience shows you that you should abandon it. A constant hammering on one nail will generally drive it home at last, so that it can be clinched." Barnum & Bailey
I share this quote with you, my friend. Whatever it is that you love to do, just do it and keep doing it. If I could add something to that quote, it would be "use your powers for good." The world needs more people like us. Do not get discouraged! Every day is a new beginning, every experience is a life lesson. Ever since that cattle call for "The Voice," I find myself more grateful than ever for this gift of music, which was handed down to me by my father. But that is another post for another day.  I'm pumped up - this week's rehearsal was a good one!

Now, time to get ready for tonight's show at the Smokehouse in Novato with Livin' Like Kings. Hey, I know it's not Madison Square Garden - yet - but I'm excited!
For a couple of hours, we'll give you all we have to give.

 - MM

p.s. Hope to see you tonight so I can share some music with you, give you a hug and thank you for sharing your time with us, for being a part of this journey.
